In addition to the experience we have also been collecting stories of hair journeys and experiences from women and we are excited to share them here.

"Growing up in Mid-City LA, when it came to hair, all I knew about was getting a press or braids. LA girls are known for the infamous “Press N Curl”, which is now known as a silk press. But we’ve been doing this for centuries. It wasn’t until about middle school where I heard the word “perm” and even then I didn’t know what it was. I asked my mom what a perm was and she made it clear I would never get one because it was a form of chemicals that made your hair straight. I had gotten my hair pressed since I was 4-years-old for school pictures. When I entered high school, I got a press every two weeks. It was trained so it lasted for 2, sometimes 3 weeks. My hair had to be laid; silky, shiny, and flowing with the wind like Pocahontas. When I had a fresh press, I wouldn’t go to party or a club, the beach, or anywhere humidity was present because my hair would sweat out (poof up). Let’s not even consider going to the gym, it’s a wrap!! Lol It was also explained to me that when you get a perm, your hair can’t sweat out and that’s one of the main differences. But for me, that was never an option because it just isn’t LA culture to get a perm. What’s the point? It isn’t as flowy and doesn’t lay the same. To this day, I’ve yet to get a perm and I never will. For now, I don’t get my hair pressed as often, maybe only once a year. I experiment with different natural styles and I love the versatility of it all. Natural is the way to go; whether that be heat-free or pressing once a month. Your hair will be so much healthier!"

"I've been natural since my sophomore in college. I would toggle back and forth between the natural, weave, and braids. I still was loving it, but I loved weaves more. When I graduated from college and went to corporate America, I put the mask back on, and I didn't think that my natural hair was appropriate in the workplace. And so I disguised my hair. I will wear weaves, straight weaves. I decided that this year actually, I fell in love with my hair all over again. I started to wear low buns. I began to my twist outs. I started to wear high puffs and just be authentically me. But I think my journey of love my hair has been a mirror of my journey of loving myself and knowing that I'm enough and knowing that you know how God created me to be is what I'm supposed to be. And it's beautiful, it's beautiful without any enhancements. "

I think she said it best “I love my hair because it’s a reflection of my soul. It’s dense, it’s kinky, it’s soft, it’s textured, it’s difficult, it’s easy and it’s fun. That’s why I love my hair.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

"So I never really learned how to care for my hair until I did it myself and that was from the of help of YouTube and then finally meeting other people with hair like mine. So then once I started getting the hang of it then I started loving it. Mmm probably as recently as three years ago. I really got it. I cut off a lot and started over and now I love it."

My hair turning into a mohawk was actually by accident. I was at a community college getting my hair done and the girl was like hey, do you want something new? I was like, okay, next thing, you know, I have a mohawk and I loved it. It was so easy because I naturally have a lot of thick hair. So it was just so easy doing a little baby patch on my hair and I did different colors. I have blue and pink I have braids and I got a tattoo on the side of my scalp. I got so many compliments. I just felt like I was an individual I felt like I didn't fit in because I don't like to fit in I don't like to be normal. I like to be different. I like to stand out. So by me having that hairstyle, I just felt like I felt free. I feel like my hair wasn't defining who I was. So it was just a beautiful thing and honestly a lot of times I wish I could go back to that hairstyle, it was literally the best time in my life. ⠀

I don't even know how much money I might have spent on products trying to get the perfect combination and then in the midst of all that is when natural hair became a thing my Instagram and hair tutorials. Then it got really bad like, oh, let me try this. Let me try that. Let me braid this and it's just became too much. I did at some point fall in love with my hair and it was when I stopped trying to do everything that I saw. I started to love my hair more when I stopped expecting it to be perfect and I learned to love it looking imperfect. When It's just free I like it the most!

I would get my hair permed I always felt like I had to have my hair done a certain way. Like, you know what I mean? I hate it had to be straight. It had to be bumped or something like that a nice hairstyle and so being natural. I feel like I'm so much more comfortable in my own skin or whatever like I don't like there was a time where I probably would never go out the house with my hair like and its natural state and now I'm just like I love my hair and my husband loves it. And so that's all that matters.
